The recent economic downturn has focused attention on the increasing importance of women as wage earners. With men losing 7 of every 10 jobs lost, more families are relying on the jobs of women for economic support.1 Women currently make up nearly half of the U.S. labor force, and many represent the primary or sole breadwinner in their families.1,2 As more families rely on the income of women, meeting the substance use and other behavioral health needs of this population will be increasingly important to the well-being of both women and their families.

Usually our lives need to become pretty unmanageable before we are looking for recovery from drug or alcohol abuse. It is not uncommon for first time addiction treatment recovery participants to have been arrested for Driving Under the Influence, or having done something so regrettable while intoxicated, that they can no longer live with the resulting shame. The problem that many addicts experience with over indulgence, or behaving in ways which are baffling, is that they think that they should be able to control it, on their own. That is where the disease concept of alcoholism and addiction seems to make sense, especially for people who are seemingly successful in other aspects of their lives but have to take drugs or alcohol to function or find any success or satisfaction in life.

We say seemingly, because if a person is a daily Meth or cocaine user for instance, and feels that they need the drug to provide the necessary high level energy to sustain and accomplish their daily work goals, which in turn allows them to make the income that supports their life style; it seems from the outside that this person is fine, but sooner than later the effects of the drug abuse begin to show up, in the work, the individuals health, accidents occur and performance dwindles.

On some level this individual knows that he/she is living in a house of cards, but usually the denial is so deep, that they must continue to abuse the cocaine or Meth which they now believe is absolutely necessary to maintain the successful life they have created. The success and self esteem is precarious at best, and it is easy to see how the house of cards can crumble when one considers treatment, to get help, get sober, and potentially adopt new motivations that dominate their life. This is a very frightening proposition for most, and that is why things need to get really bad to initiate a change, at least in this scenario.

AdCare Hospital is pleased to welcome Vyga G. Kaufmann, PhD, as director of the Couples Project for Women struggling with prescription medication or other drugs. Conducted by researchers from Harvard Medical School at AdCare, the study offers free counseling (individual or couples) and compensation up to $240 for qualified participants. Couples Project for Women Struggling with Drug Abuse research follows the successful completion of a similar study at AdCare for women with alcohol problems.

Dr. Kaufmann's experience includes positions as Project Director for the Division of Addictions at Butler Hospital and Project Manager for the Tobacco Use Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Colorado and is an instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
